Ubiquity of Exciton Localization in Cryogenic Carbon Nanotubes

چکیده
We present photoluminescence studies of individual semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes at room and cryogenic temperatures. From the analysis of spatial and spectral features of nanotube photoluminescence, we identify characteristic signatures of unintentional exciton localization. Moreover, we quantify the energy scale of exciton localization potentials as ranging from a few to a few tens of millielectronvolts and stemming from both environmental disorder and shallow covalent side-wall defects. Our results establish disorder-induced crossover from the diffusive to the localized regime of nanotube excitons at cryogenic temperatures as a ubiquitous phenomenon in micelle-encapsulated and as-grown carbon nanotubes.

Probing exciton localization in single-walled carbon nanotubes using high-resolution near-field microscopy.
We observe localization of excitons in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes at room temperature using high-resolution near-field photoluminescence (PL) microscopy. Localization is the result of spatially confined exciton energy minima with depths of more than 15 meV connected to lateral energy gradients exceeding 2 meV/nm as evidenced by energy-resolved PL imaging. Simulations of excit...

We study the excitonic recombination dynamics in an ensemble of (9,4) semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes by high-sensitivity time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. Measurements from cryogenic to room temperature allow us to identify two main contributions to the recombination dynamics. The initial fast decay is temperature independent and is attributed to the presence of small re...

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are one-dimensional materials with great prospects for applications such as optoelectronic and quantum information devices. Yet, their optical performance is hindered by low fluorescent yield. Highly mobile excitons interacting with quenching sites are attributed to be one of the main non-radiative decay mechanisms that shortens the exciton lifetime...
متن کاملExciton dynamics of single-walled carbon nanotubes revealed by femtosecond excitation correlation spectroscopy: exciton localization
Photoluminescence (PL) dynamics in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been studied by the femtosecond excitation correlation method with a 150 fs time resolution. The SWNT samples were synthesized by different methods and suspended in gelatin films or D2O solutions. The PL dynamics of SWNTs depends on the local environment surrounding the SWNTs rather than the synthesis methods. The ver...

We report on original nonlinear spectral hole-burning experiments in single wall carbon nanotubes that bring evidence of pure dephasing induced by exciton-exciton scattering. We show that the collision-induced broadening in carbon nanotubes is controlled by exciton-exciton scattering as for Wannier excitons in inorganic semiconductors, while the population relaxation is driven by exciton-excito...
